Hedeselskabet has always emphasized its social responsibility, and with our 2025 strategy Natural Growth, it is to become the foundation of Hedeselskabet – in every part of the business and the association.

Our Social Responsibility

As a participant of the United Nations Global Compact, Hedeselskabet's work on social responsibility follows the ten principles of responsible business conduct and thus also aligns with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.

At the same time, we engage in responsible business practices in terms of environmental (E), social (S), and governance (G) issues, where we document and report within the ESG framework.

ESG initiatives

We strategically focus on mitigating climate change, enhancing biodiversity, and promoting the circular use of the Earth’s scarce resources. We offer responsible solutions and are committed to reducing our own climate footprint, which we report through our climate accounts. We participate in the pilot testing of the Greenhouse Gas Protocol Land Sector and Removals Guidance, and our climate accounting follows these guidelines. We also align with the recommendations of the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) to reduce our own emissions.

In 2023, we launched Nature-Based Solutions to address climate and biodiversity challenges. At the same time, we are actively working to promote biodiversity at Kongenshus Heath and are engaged in partnerships focused on water forests for groundwater protection. Our projects include afforestation and nature restoration, contributing to carbon sequestration, biodiversity, and clean drinking water.

Hedeselskabet has also achieved FSC Ecosystem Services certification for biodiversity initiatives and is working to increase awareness and understanding of nature and biodiversity through education and collaboration.

Hedeselskabet acts with social and societal responsibility—both internally and externally.

Externally, we work to create job opportunities for individuals facing mental, social, or physical challenges, in collaboration with national job centers. In 2023, we employed 24 people in flex jobs or similar arrangements.

Internally, we strive to be a responsible and inclusive workplace with a strong focus on employee well-being, a healthy working environment, and continuous skills development. Our trainee program and mentoring scheme have contributed to the recruitment and retention of qualified employees.

To support work-life balance, Hedeselskabet offers remote work options and flexible working hours. We also prioritize workplace safety through first aid training and safety initiatives. Special attention is given to ensuring a safe environment for our many colleagues working with machinery in natural settings.

In 2023, Hedeselskabet focused on ensuring effective, transparent, and responsible operations in line with the principles of good corporate governance. Governance activities included structures, processes, and leadership principles that strengthen relationships between management, the board, employees, suppliers, and other stakeholders.

We expanded our guidelines for subcontractors, updated documentation for the EcoVadis sustainability assessment, and took steps to comply with the EU’s Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD).

Leadership principles were discussed at Hedeselskabet’s Leadership Forum, and additional employee representatives were elected to the Cooperation Committee to ensure broader representation. At the same time, we worked to increase public visibility through participation in public debates and by expanding the readership of our magazine Vækst.

The UN Sustainable Development Goals

Hedeselskabet uses the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as a development tool that encourages us to take action and set clear targets for our impact. The following goals are particularly relevant to our mission and objectives:

Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production
We ensure responsible resource use by recycling waste and by-products, utilizing side streams for energy, and working with nature-based solutions to combat climate change.

Goal 13: Climate Action
We sequester CO₂ in our own and managed forests and carry out projects related to climate protection and adaptation.

Goal 15: Life on Land
Through our PEFC-certified forests, we strive to preserve and restore terrestrial ecosystems.

Goal 17: Partnerships for the Goals
Our solutions to societal challenges are only possible through close collaboration with customers, employees, members, the public sector, private companies, and researchers.
